A number of contemporary issues face the historic La Vase Portages and we recommend you contact either the Friends of La Vase Portages or the North Bay Mattawa Conservation Authority before travelling the complete route to avoid possible problems with property owners along the route.
Addressing and working towards resolving these issues is the purpose that the Friends of La Vase Portages, a registered not-for-profit incorporation, was formed.
Hawthorn Trees. A Thorny Issue.
Originally mixed by the Voyageurs with their pemmican to add flavour, the hawthorn berry seeds were undigestible and have let their presence be known at various points along the trail. An interesting reminder that others have used these woods long ago, watch out for the long two inch thorns that identify the Hawthorn trees.
