Expedition Champlain 2009
The Voyageurs have landed.
After tracking their progress from Penetanguishene is was a pleasure to welcome the Expedition Champlain when they arrived (actually a day early) in North Bay on a cold and rainy Monday, August 2.
Retracing Champlain's 1615 Route from Huronia to Montreal
Michael Arvisais and his brigade of Voyageurs left Penetanguishine on Monday, July 20, and padled Georgian Bay, the french River and Lake Nipissing for 15 days to reach La Vase Portages.

Nipissing MP Anthony Rota and North Bay Mayor Fedeli bring welcome.
MP Rota and Mayor Fedeli shared greetings with the arriving voyageurs. The mix of cultures represented by almost 400 years of living together brought together Ojibway First Nation peoples, local French descendants of the early traders, Metis and European immigration - a strength that continues to build our community today.
Nipissing First Nation shares the ceremony.
Nipissing First Nation Councillor Perry McLeod welcomed the voyageurs with a smudge ceremony of sage grass and a traditional blessing of the canoe. Laura Liberty sharing her beautiful voice and drumming left many guests with a sense of what European first contact with the area may have sounded like and felt like. Thank you to Perry and Laura for helping with the ceremony.
