After the last few weeks on Lake Superior, Georgian Bay and a day crossing Lake Nipissing the narrow passageways and marshes along La Vase Portages mark a real change in geography.
Portaging a 270 Pound Canoe

Raising a 270 pound canoe onto your shoulders, even between 6 people is not an easy task. The "Canoe de Maitre" favoured by the Voyageurs weighed about 600 pounds without trade goods.
The Five Hour Crossing Was a Piece of Cake.

The numerous beaver dam lift overs and several portages of about 400 metres along La Vase Portages were a straight forward carry compared the the twenty kilometer Grande Portage the group completed to reach Lake Superior.
