hawthorn trees
the hawthorn trees are often found around the trailhead areas and mark the spot where undigested hawthorn berry seeds from Voyageur pemmican had been left behind to grow.
Crossing the height of land
Leaving the upper pond and the Ottawa River watershed, the other side of the portage flows into the French River watershed and had them paddling with the current for the first time in two weeks.
7000 km journey
La Vase Portages cross North Bay for about 14 kilometres, a small fraction of their overall trip of 7,000 kms. from Ottawa to Inuvik.
Portaging by headlamp
Arriving late in the day at about 5:00 p.m. and deciding to continue over La Vase Portages meant a long days portaging and paddling by headlamp reaching Champlain Park on Lake Nipissing at 10:30 p.m.
